Pound and Penny

And we are off to Western Australia, our only producer (so far) from the west. So excited to introduce you to Jess, the creator of Pound and Penny. Within our Wattle I Gift boxes we stock the Pound and Penny exfoliating scrubs and they are divine.

Hi I'm Jess. I live in a small South West town called Manjimup, where the Karri trees grow tall and the avocados are in abundance! My husband builds things & my 3 year old son destroys things. I'm a creative. I love to cook. I love to grow a garden. I love the simple things in life.

When I first began Pound and Penny, I was newly married, working as a chiropractic assistant, but looking for something "extra" to do. I was struggling to find any affordable natural skincare to suit my sensitive skin. So I searched Pinterest and began creating my own products.

Since becoming a mum, I feel my reason for doing what I do changed. I needed an outlet for creativity. I needed a bit of extra selfcare, and even if I wasn't finding the time to use the range myself, that came in the form of making the products. I find it relaxing, and the scent of essential oils probably encourages that! The range may have evolved slightly, but I will always keep the ingredients & packaging as environmentally-friendly & skin-loving as possible.

This business was only a hobby to begin with. But over time I needed it to become an income. Initially, I put a lot more effort into the experimenting of ingredients & researching eco-friendly packaging, I struggled with delivery costs & finding the right suppliers. But I have always sourced from Australian business & I think that has helped me overall.

In the future I would like to strengthen my brand, as it hasn't always been my strong skill since becoming a time-poor mum. I would like to see my stockists continue to bloom, and that means keeping Pound and Penny as true to its ethics as possible, while improving on the range as well. Feedback from customers is always valued, as it's you guys I do this for!

If I had any advice for starting a business in a rural or regional town, it would be buy in bulk where possible! I used to think I couldn't compete with the big established companies... but it was only ME standing in my way. If you believe in what you make, people will believe in you too and quite happily spend the extra cash for your handmade wares 🙂
