Dunworrie Dukkah
Meet Bev, the woman behind the delicious Dunworrie Dukkah, also my Mum. Although Bev is the founder, owner, maker of the Dukkah, its a bit of a family affair.
Kate, my sister in law has worked wonders with the packaging, while my sister and I have been along the sidelines gently encouraging mum to keep going. My brothers and Dad have been the chief taste testers.
Please tell us a little about yourself?
I was born in England but married an Australian, Bill, and have lived in Queensland for the last 32 plus years- 31 plus near Goondiwindi and the last year near Stanthorpe where we bought a retirement block. We have 4 amazing “adult children” who are scattered between Queensland and NSW. I have been a Nurse, a Grazier, a Book Shop owner, and now a maker of Dunworrie Dukkah! As well as a mother- my favourite profession !
Where did the idea for Dunworrie Dukkah come from and how has it evolved?
My Dukkah has been a log time favourite within our family and the idea for me to make it to sell was inspired by our daughter, Jo, who kindly requested that I do so as she wished to stock, and sell it, via her wonderful online Gift Business! It certainly was more complicated than I anticipated- not the making of but the legalities involved. Suffice to say, it’s now up and running and I am enjoying my latest business venture and forever grateful that I should be asked to be involved.
Can you tell us about the challenges you have faced within your business and what has helped you to overcome them?
Challenges have been made easier by enthusiasm from all family members and support from friends alike. Much research is needed and then the necessities have to be tackled and achieved. Luckily, my daughter kept me on track by emphasising that not only was it achievable but she wanted me to continue until we could market the desired product. Success- and it really was not too arduous a task but did involve some financial input to legalise it all.
Where do you see your business going in the future?
In the future I am happy to keep going as I am for a while. I do not want it to dominate my life (it won’t!) but I have too many other things I also want to do and have time for. It’s a hobby with benefits!
Any advice for small business owners in the outback?
Have someone like Jo behind you is my advice. It’s also good to stretch yourself ( like having to do, and pass an online course). Life is not meant to be easy but it should be fun and so, do something you enjoy and want to do.
